Maverick Persona, the new artistic collaboration between Amerigo Verardi and Deje, releases its second album of 2024.
On Friday, November 1st, 2024, the second album of the Maverick Persona project will be released. This is the moniker under which Amerigo Verardi and Deje (Matteo D’Astore), release music and lyrics. Just a few months after the surprising debut of What Tomorrow? (NOS Records, March 2024), the duo from Italy returns to the scene with In the Name of, a new ambitious full-length album, released on CD and digital by the labels NOS Records and MarraCult.

In the Name of
projecting the listener into decidedly adventurous, shifting, unclassifiable, and contaminated soundscapes: a constellation of voices and sounds manipulated and distorted by Deje and Verardi in service of often unpredictable, sometimes truly disorienting compositional solutions. With coherence and originality that is out of the ordinary, the work constantly speaks a language and taste that are distinctly analogue, while simultaneously embracing its complementary opposite—a digital electronic code in which a palpable human warmth can still be felt.
Musically, the work seems to draw inspiration from the controlled chaos of the more abstract and experimental contemporary West Coast sound, à la Brainfeeder Records, from the schizophrenic sonic puzzles of Brian Wilson’s Smile, from the esoteric electronic jazz madness of Flying Lotus, from the shamanic electronic world music of early Nitin Sawhney, from the suburban unease of Lou Reed’s Street Hassle and Berlin, and certain inescapable darknesses of late-period Bowie. The music of Maverick Persona legitimately aspires to claim the original title.Textually, the album tells a single story, almost like a concept album.
However, here the outlines are rarefied, akin to a dream continuously interrupted by short circuits and streams of consciousness that highlight the complete synchronicity between the movements of the music and those of the words. The oniric plots revolve around the experiences of a young man growing up in a futuristic, unhealthy, and irreparably corrupted society. A society he tries to rebel against with bursts of love and violence. Which he ultimately becomes an inevitable sacrificial victim.

Maverick Persona,
literally “unlabelable personality,” is the name of the project conceived by two Italian musicians. Amerigo Verardi, one of the most important artist in the Italian underground scene of the last thirty years (Allison Run, Betty’s Blues, Lotus, The Freex, etc.), and Matteo D’Astore, also known as Deje, a young emerging talent in electronic and experimental music. Their debut album What Tomorrow? (NOS Records/MarraCult) was released in March 2024 and received positive acclaim. On November 1st, their second surprising album, In the Name of, will be released.
