KICK – Some Velvet Morning
Out July 7th, 2022 via Anomic Records (Berlin, Germany) and Dischi Sotterranei (Padua, Italy), new cover of Some Velvet Morning. The track came to life from the collaboration between KICK, Italian duo from Brescia formed by Chiara Amalia Bernardini and Nicola Mora, and some members of fellow citizens Listrea (the singer and guitarist Fabio Pietroboni/Bafyo and the bassist Edoardo Serena/Pizzediliquirizia).
Why another cover of this classic
The choice of this song is obviously not accidental. Τhe four friends and musicians wanted to pay homage to THAT track. Artists they love and follow, including Primal Scream, Slowdive, and Lydia Lunch with Rowland S. Howard revisited the Hazelwood classic through the course of music history.
What is it like?
Moving ambiguously between dream pop and psychedelia, Some Velvet Morning furthermore perfectly connects to the issues facing in the second KICK’s album, Light Figures. Led by the singles Setting Tina (featuring Scott Reeder from Kyuss and Fireball Ministry), Sirens Never Sleep, Rubberlover and Viole. Some scarce thoughts: Τhe connection with nature. Εxploration of darkness, and overcoming the dichotomy between body and soul. Speaking about bucolic contexts, the cover was recorded in a small mountain hut, on the Italian Alps. they did it during a three-day session. “Flowers growing on a hill, dragonflies and daffodils…”.
With Marco Fasolo (Jennifer Gentle, I Hate My Village)as a producer, Light Figures represented an important step forward . At the same time a change of direction. More analogical, minimal and heavy sounds – compared to what previously made by KICK. KICK’s current sound combines rough elements. There are “deviant” melodies and often obsessive rhythms in a sound that could ideally be defined “sweet noise“. Luckily, a style on their own melting the noise with the softness of the atmosphere, without any limits of genre.
