Oh Lord, is there anything in this world the Greeks are bad at!? It would be so much easier to have at least some examples to bring peace and balance to this world. But no!
In 2011, Greek band – 1000mods released their first full-length album “Super Van Vacation”, which is still relevant, still beloved, still a cult classic!
It might seem surprising that a genre with roots in America has become so popular in Greece (and Cyprus, for that matter). And how did it happen that the outstanding representatives of stoner rock are pleiades of Greek groups and 1000mods is one of them?
Of course, it would be unfair to limit 1000mods’ sound solely to stoner and heavy metal influences. Considering all their albums we can highlight elements of psychedelic rock, doom metal, sludge rock, desert rock, and, of course, the huge influence of the “Seattle sound”.
But all these styles were reflected in the band’s sound gradually, sounding stronger or weaker from album to album. This is a sure sign that the band isn’t composing material to please, or stamp out a tried-and-true sound over the years, but is instead conveying their experience, their state of mind at the moment of composition.
1000mods are creating their own history
like a true living organism – ready to change for the sake of survival.
But let’s return to the origins. In 2006, four childhood friends decided to get together and play music. Thus, the village of Chiliomodi (Χιλιομόδι) became known to the public not only as the band’s starting point, but also because of the play on words in the band’s name – “1000mods” (1000 in Greek is χίλια).
After releasing several EPs in 2007 and 2009, the world was greeted with the full-length album “Super Van Vacation”, thanks to which the band becomes a significant player in the modern rock scene.
The sound of “Super Van Vacation”
characterised by thick, fuzzy guitar textures and hypnotic rhythms, embodying the classic stoner rock aesthetic but with a fresh vibrancy. The album captures the nostalgic vibe of classic 70s rock while blending in modern influences.
While listening to the album, you become addicted because you are completely immersed in it, completely captured by the compelling sound contrast: both heavier moments and melodic sections.
I don’t want you to think of this album as the band’s most outstanding, and I certainly don’t want you to limit yourself to it alone. But how pleasant it is to realize that in front of you is a real treasure that can further enhance the listener’s musical taste.
And how nice it is to listen to something that has left such a strong imprint and given such a strong push to the band for almost 15 years since its release.
“Super Van Vacation” shows how stoner rock still stands out, even in a music scene full of different genres. The band’s dedication has won them loyal fans and respect worldwide. With this album, 1000mods not only make their mark but also inspire new bands to explore stoner and desert rock.
Eventually, “Super Van Vacation” is an essential listen for fans of stoner rock and those seeking to explore the iconic “retro”, distorted sound. The album’s blend of classic rock sensibilities with band’s own prism of sensations and understanding of this sound represents the very essence of what makes 1000mods a standout band in today’s music scene.
